Imagine…
…you didn’t get to go to school….
…and neither did half the people you know…
…just like almost half the children in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Imagine…
…what you and UNICEF could do together…
…so that Africa’s children no longer have to imagine school!
SCHOOLS FOR AFRICA
Transforming Lives through Education
Schools for Africa is a worldwide joint initiative of UNICEF, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation that aims to create schools that offer a safe environment where children can learn, play and have access to clean water and sanitation facilities.
UNICEF Canada and the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign is bringing hope for the future by supporting the Schools for Africa programme in two specific countries: Malawi and Rwanda. Together with our global partners, UNICEF’s Schools for Africa programme aims to enable one million children in Malawi and Rwanda to go to school.
Thanks to the funds raised since 2005; we have already seen impressive progress in Malawi and Rwanda. Some of these accomplishments include:
Malawi
108 classrooms were constructed in 39 schools. Over 772 School-in-a-Box kits have been distributed across the country 494 more schools now have desks and chairs inside their classrooms 10,480 teachers have been trained in child-friendly learning practices 254 schools were provided with sanitation facilities and 68 with clean drinking water so that the daily chore of obtaining clean water – a task often assigned to children – can be completed while attending school, rather than instead of attending schoolRwanda
A cumulative total of 4,770 desks, 50 filing cabinets, 231 chairs and wooden tables have been donated to schools since 2006. Teacher Resource Centres are being established at each of the model schools to provide professional training and materials to teachers focusing on life skills, numeracy and literacy. 594 classrooms have been constructed in 54 schools to provide child-friendly learning space. Each new school includes bathroom facilities for girls and boys that are also accessible to children with special needs More than 2,325 teachers have been trained in various topics such as special-needs education, life-skills training, and sports and recreational activities which involve all students including those with disabilities.
